WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD – HERE’S HOW

I know this is a little off topic. But after reading about the exciting work by the RoomTo Read organization, I couldn’t help myself. I had to share.

First,   A  Little Backstory

I am semi-retired now after 33 years working in the trenches of rehabiltation. And I wanted to find another way to make this world a little better.

Then I read about John Wood and his journey to help create schools and libraries all over the world. His book, Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy hit me hard, at just the right time in my life. I was hooked and still am.

Then I came across another book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates. (yes, the Melinda Gates). My appreciation for the work of Room to Read deepened.

Both John Wood and Melinda Gates presented a strong case for how access to education and books for young girls in developing countries is one of the best ways to lift whole communities out of poverty.

“When you send a girl to school, the good deed never dies. It goes on for generations, advancing every public good, from health to economic gain, to gender equality and national prosperity.”  –  Melinda Gates

So, I wanted to help. I have started to create a couple of websites that will promote this exciting work.

For now, here is a 3 minute video that highlights the great work of a group of very energetic (and GSD, see prior post) people from Room To Read. Sit back and let it all warm your heart.
